    AUSTRALIA: LIFE & LAND

    Australian Population

With a population of 20 million, Australia is the continent with the lowest population. The largest part of the Australian population lives in the south eastern part of the continent along the east coast, most of them in urban centres (more than 85 per cent).

The majority of the population are people of English or Irish origin. There have also been many immigrants from other countries, recently especially from East Asia. The native Australian people are called Aborigines and Maori, but they only constitute a very low percentage of the population (just over 2 per cent of the Australian population) and some tribes are extinct.

Today two thirds of the native people are urbanized and most of them do not live in their traditional but in a modern way. Although the Australian population is diverse, 15 million speak only English at home.
